Girls football development across Africa – from Namibia to South Africa
As an introduction to the first training sessions, GUFC offers movement games for the lower classes of various schools in partnership with Playtime Namibia. These sessions sometimes even replace the very irregular PE lessons. At the same time, they help us identify U9 talents who can then be invited to further sessions and take part in a tournament.
In autumn, the GUFC Girls School League takes place with the support of local partners. Teams from U11 to U17 compete against each other across different age groups. The experienced Playtime coaches – some of whom have played for the national team themselves – handle the organisation. Additional grassroots coaching courses support the teams' teachers.
In autumn we enter the 3rd edition of the Girls School League in the capital of Lesotho. School teams from Maseru and the surrounding area compete for the title across 3 age groups. The cooperation partner there is the women's football club Motseeo FC.
At the 2024 launch, which we set up on behalf of the German Embassy, the teams also implemented and were recognised for various environmental initiatives as part of the championship.
In Stellenbosch, alongside the Girls School League held for the first time in 2026, various holiday programmes and tournaments for girls aged 10–17 are running. Grassroots-level coach education is an integral part of sustainable development here, with Futsal being a popular format.
Magic Ladies FC is a club in the heart of Cape Town. Two girls' teams currently compete in the Western Cape Region women's football league, and in 2025 they even claimed the Coke Cup title. With our dedicated structure both on and off the pitch, the development of girls and young women has become a benchmark in this area.
As a result, first-team players have made it into the national squad and two U17 goalkeepers have been selected for the provincial team. On the sporting side, we have successfully helped numerous players reach the first division (Hollywood Bets League).
After 5 strong years and building up the structure, we are now looking to establish our own infrastructure with a pitch and functional facilities, and have adjusted our sporting direction following the withdrawal from the 2nd division (currently no league play) of the SASOL League.
